It can also be used to remove foreign objects that may be lodged, including food, and to treat conditions such as bleeding or ulcers. Additionally, it can be used for tissue biopsy in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Patients receive a local anesthetic spray applied to the back of the throat. This anesthetic numbs the throat and reduces the gag reflex. An intravenous sedative is administered through a catheter placed in a vein in the arm. The sedative helps patients remain relaxed and comfortable. While patients are sedated, the doctor and medical staff monitor their vital signs.<\/p>\n
During the procedure, patients lie on their back or left side on the examination table. The endoscope is carefully advanced into the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.<\/p>\n
The microcamera on the endoscope transmits video images to a monitor, allowing for detailed examination of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Air is introduced through the endoscope to inflate the stomach and duodenum, making it easier to visualize these areas. Special tools that slide through the endoscope enable the doctor to take biopsies, stop potential bleeding, and perform any necessary treatment or intervention.<\/p>\n
