What is a gastric balloon?
A gastric balloon is an alternative to bariatric surgery and is recommended for individuals with lower body mass index (BMI) levels. Most patients lose between 20 and 50 pounds over a period of six months (about 10 to 20% of their total body weight).
The gastric balloon can be effective, does not require surgery, and can be placed in a few minutes. However, it is a temporary solution and requires lifestyle changes, training, and support to be successful.
Can I get a gastric balloon?
The gastric balloon was approved in the United States in 2015 for patients with a BMI of 30 to 40 who have not had previous weight loss surgery. Check your BMI.
3 types of gastric balloons
Your doctor may recommend only one type of gastric balloon. This may be due to the fact that they have not been trained/certified in other types of balloons. Don’t hesitate to ask about other gastric balloon options when you meet with your doctor.
OBALON
Obalon is the latest gastric balloon capsule approved in the U.S. There are two main differences from other balloons:
- The balloon is inserted via a pill that is swallowed with a glass of water.
- It is inflated with air.
A total of 3 balloons are inserted. The second balloon is added one month after the first, and the third is usually added during the second month.
RESHAPE DUAL WEIGHT LOSS BALLOON
Two balloons are inserted simultaneously and under light anesthesia.
The features of the Reshape dual weight loss balloon are:
- Larger capacity balloons compared to other gastric balloons.
- Both balloons are inserted during a single procedure. The next required procedure is only when the balloon is removed.
- A strong guidance and support program that includes:
- One year of dietary guidance and an online portal where you can connect with your activity.
Patients who actively participate in their program lose 100% more weight than those who do not, according to company data.
The Reshape gastric balloon is not available in our country.
ORBERA
Orbera is the most widely used, with over 220,000 balloons distributed worldwide and many successful weight loss patients.
Recognizing that support and lifestyle changes are key to patient success, Orbera offers a range of tools to support their patients.
Orbera provides an app and guidance for 12 months after the procedure.
Although we prefer the Baritastic app, the Orbera app offers recipes and some other features that may be worth checking out.
They offer 1:1 sessions with their dietitians along with group sessions.
The obesity gastric balloon capsule from the American company Obalon Therapeutics is already available in the UK (costing around 3,500 euros) but not yet in our country.
The Obalon balloon is usually placed by swallowing a pill with a little water and then undergoing examinations.
The Reshape and Orbera balloons are placed under light anesthesia via endoscopy.
